Handmade White Raku Tea Bowl 'Dawn'

The last wisps of mist of the night drift through the starless black of the sky as the sun finally rises again on the horizon. This handmade tea bowl was designed to match this moment in the morning. It is meant to capture the frosty mood of autumn mornings and dispel it with its comforting warmth. As a Japanese Raku tea bowl (jap. Chawan), it is born from fire! Raku is an old Japanese technique that is rarely used in Europe because it is so dangerous. At about 1000 degrees Celsius, the oven door is opened and the hand-potted tea bowl is placed in beech wood chips. These ignited immediately and the soot and ash created the silky black of the starless night. The secondary clouds are criss-crossed by black lines, the raku craquelé. It is the unmistakable distinguishing mark of the raku technique and makes this chawan a unique one-of-a-kind.

Despite the most careful cleaning, the smell of soot and fire has not yet completely disappeared. It takes time for the fire to release its treasures.

The tea bowl has a wobble-free and stable base. It is not yet 100 % waterproof, which is due to the raku technique. The suspended matter in the tea or coffee sinter the few still open channels and quickly seal the handmade tea bowl. This tea bowl is not for people who down their tea, it is something for connoisseurs!

The tea bowl weighs approx. 200 g. It is approx. 7 cm high and has a diameter of 9 cm at the upper rim. The filling volume is approx. 250 mL.
